Well, sort of….
NaPoReadMo for me this year.
As some of you may know (but most of you probably don’t), my wife and I have owned and operated a small catering company for the past nine years and are now celebrating the one year anniversary of the opening of our restaurant, which is in the same building as the catering company and where it just so happens that we also live.
My day usually starts at about 6am and doesn’t stop until at least 11pm. We finally just started closing the café on Mondays, so that we do now get at least most of one day off a week (plus Sunday nights–after our Sunday brunch buffet), barring any catered events which trump our free time. We are a very small business(-es) so we are basically on point the whole time.
I’m lucky if I can sit down while I eat.
Even luckier if my “meal” doesn’t get interrupted at least once.
We also just started opening at 8am instead of 7am on weekdays so we can now manage a whopping 5-6 hours of sleep a night….if we’re lucky….if we don’t take that time to do crazy things for ourselves like….write poems….or paint….or….
I am still writing, but not finishing much. Mostly “doodling.” I don’t have the time or the energy for the real work of finishing poems, of opening myself up to them, listening to them, letting them tell me what they need to say.
So this year for National Poetry Writing Month I’m going to be doing something a little bit different and just a bit scary for me.
I am going to read (out loud-gasp!), record and post one of my poems every day.
Much of what I have been reading and listening to has got me thinking about the orality of poems in general and my poems in particular. I am also trying to work up the courage to read my work in front of real live humans (gasp! again).
I am interested in what a poem does when it exists in an aural space. How it changes. How it differs from the poem on the page, from the poem in the ear of the mind.
I am not interested in Slam or Spoken Word. I’m not even sure I fully comprehend what those two sub-genres are about.
I will probably be recording a few poems at a time and then publishing them one per day as I still have to struggle to find the time to do this.
They will all be from the past 2+years of this blog.
I *might* get something new finished…..but no promises.
Everything comes at the cost of sleep.
The day pulls at my eyelids as I write this.
The days pull at my eyelids like this every day.
I will attempt to continue my Monday Music and Phriday Photo posts through all of this.
Wish me luck.
I wish you luck and congratulations on your one year anniversary. 🙂

I think that you’ve entered into one of the most labour intensive businesses that you could have!

No doubt about that Ashley. I’ve actually been in and out of the business (mostly in) since I was fifteen, so that’s going on thirty years (ouch!), but the restaurant owning thing is new, and no one can prepare you for how much work it is. They can tell you, but until you’re down in it….

Congrats. And, yes, I think poems do take on a different life when read aloud and heard. I’m sure you will also find it a benefit to your writing and revision as you hear yourself speaking what you have written. Good move. Best….>KB

thanks, KB–the revisions have already begun, no big surprise….

thanks Natalie–are you doing anything special? A poem a day, perhaps? I’m certain you could do it. And certain that you would end up with Thirty Gems at the end of the month.

Hmm, not too sure. My poetry engine keeps stalling. Maybe NaPoWriMo is just what I need to get started back up again. We’ll see 🙂

Ha! Have you been talking to Natalie about Bodhidharma again?
Mine feel quite peeled much of the time.

I think having eyes like peeled grapes is part of being a parent, a poet and a business owner. You poor thing. 🙂

No, I’ve never been. Actually never been to Cali. Been all over the country, but never got that far south/west.
We’ll have to see how this goes. I’ve already missed a day.
Can I tag you back come May?

I had no idea! The restaurant biz is so very tough, but that satisfaction you get is addictive – nothing like feeding people and making them happy. Are you in NY? I can’t remember – outside of the city? I apologize for catching up backwards…it is of course a different experience, listening rather than reading a poem, but too often the reading annoys me because of some quirk in the author’s voice or expression. Not so with yours – you seem to be hitting just the right tone – for me anyway. Congrats on one year. What a juggling act.

Thank you–I know what you mean about reading voices. I have been listening to a lot of podcasts and readings by poets via podcast and so many of them make me cringe. I’d much rather read the poem on the page. Kind of like when books are made into movies. The book is so often, so much better. Or perhaps it is like the subtitled version of a foreign film versus the dubbed version. So often the poet’s “voice” speaks more clearly through the written page than it does through their own physical voice.
But all these things, all these layers and permutations are exactly why I felt compelled to do this. To see how my “voice” compares to my voice.
I am just beginning and learning much. Many of these things I am sure will change many times in the future. This is the joy of it. The cartography of it……
No not NY–and no apologies necessary. I have waffled much and many times on how much to share of my “real” life, how much to remain a mystery.
We are in Saint Louis. More like a small fish in a medium sized pond.
Thanks Again, for your time and words–they are much appreciated.

Saint Louis, interesting! I’ve never been there, spent almost no time on the Midwest except the first 5 yrs of my life in central Mich. You have a southern influence there, I like that. And the music tradition, yes?
I too hesitate to reveal too much online. If you it do it right, and judiciously, you hit the mark and it enriches your readers’ experience, add it does here.
Keep playing!
